Archetype Publication Status

Not all archetypes in CKM are ready for prime time yet. To differentiate stable and unstable archetypes, the following states and icons are used in CKM.

These are displayed for example in the left-hand menus where an icon is situated immediately to the left of each archetype name - this indicates the publication status of the clinical content.

The active states of the clinical content of an archetype are:

  • Initial - The archetype is still in an incubator and considered exprimental at best;
  • Draft - the archetype is in its early stages of development and has not undergone any domain expert review;
  • Team Review - the archetype is currently undergoing team review;
  • Review Suspended - the archetype has undergone some team review, but this process in not yet complete and the review is not currently active. Effectively the review is paused;
  • Published - the archetype has completed team review and has been published; and
  • Reassess (Draft) - a archetype that has previously been published but further - not yet officially published - changes have been made to the archetype.
  • Reassess (Team review) - change to a published archetype are under a further review. The end of the subsequent review will likely be the publication of a new minor or major revison of the archetype or - if the changes are not backwardly compatible - a completely new version of the archetype.
  • Reassess (Suspended) the review round for an archetype currently under reassessment has been suspended.

There are two other states within CKM that are not displayed unless as the result of a specific search. These are:

  • Rejected - the archetype was removed from an active status, before publication; and
  • Deprecated - the archetype was removed from an active status, after publication. Usually there will be a replacement archetype available or at least under development.

In addition to the icon, it is possible to view the state of each archetype by using the mouse to hover over the archetype name.

Lifecycle

CKM features a state machine for status of a resource.
For example, it is only possible to deprecate a resource that has already been published, whereas resources that have never been published are rejected instead.

Other Publication States

While the described content publication or lifecycle state describes the status of the (clinical) content expressed in the archetype, an archetype can have additional publication/lifecycle state:

  1. An archetype has a translation state for each language the archetype has been translated into. The rationale is that translation need to be quality-assured and maintained to ensure the content in the original language and the translation are identical.
  2. An archetype has a terminology state for each terminology such as Snomed CT bound to the archetype. These bindings may only be added only after content of the archetype has been published. they require a completely different expertise to the reviewing of the clinical content and are lifecycled individually.
  3. Templates, termsets and release sets also have the same content publication states.
