Aim of the Clinical Modelling Tooling WG

This Working Group focuses on the modelling tools used by the clinical community. Many issues seen in daily modelling work are not consistently documented, are handled through unofficial workarounds, or are difficult to resolve due to missing documentation, unclear use cases, or limited tool support.

The WG aims to:

  • Create and maintain a single, easy-to-navigate hub for clinical modelling tooling documentation covering tutorials, videos, release notes/new features, official openEHR tools, and community-contributed supporting tools.

  • Collect and triage tooling issues encountered by modellers (bugs, usability gaps, missing features, unclear behaviour).

  • Report issues quickly and clearly to the relevant tool builders (openEHR Software Program, vendors, universities, implementers), including reproducible steps where possible.

  • Share community solutions (workarounds, patterns, “how-to” guidance) in a central place so modellers can find answers without repeating the same investigations.

  • Provide clinical requirements and feedback to guide tooling development, aligning with the Clinical Program’s role in specifying needs and supporting implementation.

  • Maintain and regularly update the Modelling Tools page on https://openehr.org/modelling-tools/ within the clinical modelling section (TBD)

Clinical modelling tools used by the community, including (but not limited to):

Out of scope:

  • “form builders” - these are tools that consume clinical models (e.g., archetypes/templates) via a openEHR server to build data-entry forms and are often tightly coupled to a specific vendor platform. Although some clinicians who work closely with IT may use them, these tools are not considered clinical modelling tools and do not fall on this WG’s scope because they do not create or maintain clinical models, they only implement forms based on existing models.

If you are developing or improving a tool that supports clinical modelling in openEHR (e.g., authoring, reviewing, publishing, terminology binding, validation, or related workflows) and would like feedback from the modelling community, please contact the WG Lead. Note that this WG operates in a spirit of sharing and mutual support. We’re happy to review and give feedback on tools that are free to use and benefit the wider openEHR clinical modelling community. If your tool is intended to be a paid/commercial product that will not help in anyway the clinical modelling community, please refrain from requesting community feedback through this WG.
