Aim of the Translations WG

The aim of the Translations Working Group is to ensure clear, accurate, and consistent translations of openEHR archetypes, templates, and related clinical models across multiple languages. The group promotes high-quality multilingual interoperability by supporting harmonized terminology, preserving clinical meaning, and reducing ambiguity between translated versions.

The working group will provide guidance, best practices, tutorials, and supporting documentation for the translation process, including recommendations for governance, versioning, review workflows, and terminology usage. It also contributes to the improvement and extension of existing documentation where gaps or inconsistencies are identified.

Another key objective is to support the coordinated management of translations within the Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM), working alongside Clinical Knowledge Administrators (CKAs), translation editors, and translation administrators. The group aims to minimize unnecessary branching and duplication of translations, promote alignment between language versions, and facilitate sustainable maintenance and governance of multilingual openEHR models.

The group also aims to strengthen and expand the translation community by increasing the number of translation reviewers and administrators involved in CKM activities, supporting contributors in maintaining existing translations, and assisting CKAs in the management and review of translation branches and related workflows.

In addition, the working group will explore future improvements to translation support within CKM and related tooling, including collaboration with the ADL Designer and CKM development teams. Potential areas of work include the creation and maintenance of reusable multilingual terminology lists and mechanisms to automatically populate common terms when new languages are added to archetypes, helping improve consistency, efficiency, and long-term maintainability of translations across the different archetypes offered to the openEHR community.
