@Ian McNicoll - if we have to have a value, then local null flavour maybe least worst option.

@Pablo Pazos - consider using GENERIC_ENTRY; but then query engines need to know systematically how to handle such data.

NB: SQL null processing is by default to always return FALSE for comparisons involving NULL valued fields.
